There’s been a lot of talk lately about bidding adieu to 2016. And I get it. There were lots of reasons that it felt like a superlatively crappy year. If we were to mark on a calendar the events we witnessed in this past year collectively—to say nothing of what we’ve experienced individually—the days would look dark indeed. And not to get too morose, but there are lots of reasons to acknowledge that we’re facing even tougher times in 2017.
But a calendar can also be a hopeful thing: A place to scribble events we look forward to, a guide to monthly meditations, a reminder for anniversaries and birthdays and milestones worth celebrating, a place for listing goals and holding ourselves accountable.
I’m ever hopeful that a new year can be an opportunity to forge a new path. For myself, I’m taking 2017 as an opportunity to reevaluate my values and my commitment to hard work, not just for myself personally but for my business more generally. There’s gonna be a lot of crap to add to the calendar in 2017, without doubt. There will be new anniversaries that are mournful or shameful or just plain difficult, but I’m hopeful that my 2o17 calendar will have good to outweigh the bad. At the end of it, I hope I can look back and say that I’ve worked hard and been vigilant and made a difference.
In case you still have gifts on your list (or you’re hoping for something hopeful and pretty to fill your space in 2017), here’s a list of some of the simple and lovely wall calendars I’ve spotted for 2017:
Postalco One Year Wall Calendar
The Brown Paper Movement Recycled Paper Medium Format Calendar
Little Lark Lunar Phase Calendar
Margins Imprint Gold Foil Moon Calendar
Red Star Inc. No Exp Wall Calendar

I buy this calendar every year from the Syracuse Cultural Workers: https://www.syracuseculturalworkers.com/products/calendar-2017-peace-calendar
Felt especially important to support them this year. Thanks for the post!
Reevaluating values & commitment to hard work. These are noble thoughts and I hope to be doing the same. One of the things about this past year that I’ve come to appreciate is that it wasn’t gentle. I came to see that I’d been complacent & cozy in my little corner of the world & that there is so much that needs doing. So much that needs courage & kindness. I hope, like you, to be vigilant in this coming year. To care deeply & act lovingly. Thank you for your intentionality in this space & am so looking forward to your inspiration in 2017. Happy New Year!
What a lovely, thoughtful comment, just as inspirational as what Erin wrote.
Every year the doggie daycare we send our dog to makes calendars for everyone featuring the dogs, and it’s one of my favorite things! It’s so nice to look over at the wall and see a bunch of happy dogs smiling at me 🙂
Some nice choices and helpful things to think about here. I get a Met museum desk calendar every year and seeing a new piece of art every day really brightens my morning. (Especially for those of us far from the museum itself!)
I love this sweet and simple letterpress calendar by Kristen Dake:

wow!! thank you for sharing, Doe. I feel honored to be mentioned.
Erin – if you’d like for me to send you one of the Bennet 2017 Letterpress Wall Calendars let me know! I’ve been looking to partner with some new folks to share my work – & would love to chat with you about the idea if you’re interested ☺️
I’m not generally one for resolutions, but I always feel refreshed when the new year is lingering ahead…

How lovely. They are like works of art.
I love love my neuyear.net red calandar that all fits on the inside of my pantry door.
Hi Erin, great roundup of calendars. I’ve a practical question: how does one use the calendars that don’t allow space for writing appointments, anniversaries, notes etc? Like, for instance, the Appointed Wall Calendar or the Botanical Letterpress Calendar? Is it more just to keep track of the date and to display as an ornamental piece? This is something that has mystified me for years, as I tend to opt for calendars like the No Exp Calendar.
Also: how do you use calendars and go about planning and marking days in your family? I bought a calendar to put on our wall last year to keep track of our schedules, but found that I had developed the habit of adding dates and appointments to the planner on my phone and in my diary more often.
Choose your own adventure! I love simple wall calendars that mark the passing of days as well as planners that allow you to jot down longer plans for the day.
Lovely options here! I also love the Nikki McClure calendars – I buy her updated version each year.

For the past several years I’ve been ordering a small, simple wall calendar from Rifle Paper Company. I received my 2017 calendar in the mail today. The colors of these calendars always match the peach tones of my very Waldorf style home.
Cheers,
Traci
We also buy a calendar from Rifle every year! The perfect size for our small apartment.
Love that moon calendar. Wonderful!
