my week in objects (mostly.)

January 26, 2018

five little things that made my week.

1. this sweet pea.

{the sweetest little nugget there ever was.}

2. these other sweet things.

{for early morning energy.}

3. this helpful mate.

 {for more early morning backup.}

4. this bit of green.

{because every brand-new baby week needs a bouquet.}

5. this ukulele.

{but mostly the little bug who plays it.}

other things:

home visits.

a culture that sees female pain as normal and male pleasure as a right.

mend.

loved clothes last.

stop looking for straightforward collective agreement.

mini fridge lessons.

buttons.

kale-sauce.

PS. Thanks so everyone who chimed in with your favorite podcasts! So many gems on this list.

    That article from The Week is so real. I just read it… and then re-read it… and it’s just hanging in the air now, mirroring so many conversations I’ve had with other straight women. I don’t even know what to say about it other than it’s jarring how true it feels.

      This article rang so true for me. It elaborates on a comment I made to my sister last week when we were discussing our reactions/thoughts about the Aziz Ansari article. Women are conditioned to give, Men are conditioned to take. And we do it at our own expense. Hardly ever at theirs. We have to change this dynamic.

    I would love to know where that guitar/ukelele stand is from if you know! Thank you!

      Don’t know! Probably a local instrument shop!

    Can you share the little nugget’s name with us? (I’m fascinated by baby names!)

    Jia Tolentino’s New Yorker piece anguished me but also offered comfort in its expression of a shared experience. Reading it, “I got a familiar, awful feeling—a dissociative and desperate shimmer … like someone throwing poisoned confetti at the back of my neck.“

    That awful shimmer. I am so sick of being set on the defensive during daily conversations about sexual assault—this with men (and women) I know and love just as often as with passing strangers. Tolentino makes lucid some of the body-pain I’m sure so many of have been experiencing as we do the work of standing our ground, gritting our teeth, and having these conversations. Thanks for finding and sharing, Erin. Words like these offer a brief but potent antidote to the poison.

    It’s a marvel to me how babies all look alike when wrapped in a blanket. Just beautiful.

    I am a native Portlander (a rare breed these days) and I love where I live! I’d be so curious to hear about any favorite destinations from your trip this time. There’s always something new and fun eat, read, shop and explore in our fair city.

      Lovely! My brother-in-law grew up there too! I’ve loved exploring in the past, but I was there on auntie duty this time around, so stuck mostly to home!

    Thank you for putting “Seeing White” on my radar. It’s blowing my mind.
