I’m thinking about gatherings of people, and of dresses, and of things we might hold tight as the days get shorter and the nights get longer. Here’s a quick daydream for a cocoon of a cold-weather outfit good for festive revelry or solo escape or both.
A cropped turtleneck for under.
A woolen vest for over.
A kaalé scarf for wherever it pleases me.
Wool tights for keeping warm.
Velvet slippers for staying fancy.
A book for disappearing into (just in case).

TAKE ACTION:
In an effort to ground this make-believing in something much more down to earth, here’s something to do today:
Last week the Supreme Court heard oral arguments for Haaland vs. Brackeen, a case that could have serious ramifications for the future of the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA). The ICWA was passed in the 1970s in an effort to rectify generations of harm done to indigenous children in this country. Today the ICWA supports Native kids, strengthens families, and sustains indigenous cultural identity from one generation to the next. Support the #ProtectICWA campaign by learning more about the cause (this one-pager is a great start and this Mother Jones article goes into more detail about the current case), signing the Protect ICWA Petition, and following the work of activists and community members on Instagram at @ProtectICWA.
