foggy ferry.

January 13, 2014

ferryfog4249 It was a balmy 50 degrees and drizzling on Saturday. The kind of day when New York City masquerades as the Pacific Northwest and lower Manhattan puts on a show of fog and clouds to mesmerize anyone brave enough to be out in the elements. James and I decided to go on a little seafaring adventure to shake off the week and take advantage of the warmer—if not exactly beautiful—weather.

Where I tend to get melancholy on dreary days, James revels in them. So I took a tip from his unrelenting cheer, zipped up my rainy weather gear and trundled down to the river and aboard the East River Ferry for a jaunt up to Williamsburg.

There was hot tea and hotter pizza and fog enough to erase the ugly Verizon building from the skyline. Couldn’t find much to complain about in all that.

PS. The coat I’m wearing in these photos was a gift from Reading My Tea Leaves sponsor, Bridge & Burn. Made of navy blue waxed canvas and fully lined in chambray, the Waxed Warbler was the perfect thing for adventuring on a mild winter day. Many thanks for supporting the RMTL sponsors who keep this little space ticking.

Wonderful photos! I was in NY a couple years ago (I live in mid-Missouri) and took in all the sights; I was a star-struck tourist and am in awe of people who actually get to live there! I've been a huge fan and follower of your blog ever since there was an article on Yahoo about your tiny apartment. Keep on blogging…I live in NY vicariously through you!

Nice fog and ferry photography 🙂 There's something uplifting about the sounds and smells of a rainy day near the water.

New York always looks wonderful but you look fabulous all pregnant. I'm with James, NYC looks terrific in the gloom. Photos always seem to look better.

As a Pacific Northwest native, I agree with your husband that gray, drizzly days are meant to be revelled in. 🙂 Glad you ventured out with a camera, as your photographs are lovely.

I was in New York once briefly. Scared the heck out of this wide open spaces South Dakota girl. Would love to visit again though.

First and foremost, you look beautiful, Erin. Secondly, these photos took my breath away. The one of Lady Liberty in the fog? It made my heart ache and long to be back in NYC (and, btw, I've visited once, for 5 days, in 2007, but the city stole a piece of my heart and kept it). I hope you enjoyed your time in Williamsburg despite the not-so-friendly weather!

Hello- my name is Emily and I came across your blog last spring (can't remember how) but I really liked your "curried egg salad sandwich with apples and almonds recipe" post so I bookmarked it 🙂

I was trying to think about what to make for dinner tonight, and starting perusing my saved recipes. Since last spring when I found your blog, a lot has happened in my life including a move from Germany back to the USA and so truthfully, I forgot about your blog until I saw the bookmark and thought "Oh yeah, that was a memorable meal- equal parts easy and delicious!"

After reading the recipe, I thought "I wonder if this blogger has posted anything lately?" and it seems like you have! These photos of you, your husband, and NYC were so calm and beautiful- I really enjoyed the post 🙂 Your Instagram feed also had some very beautiful photos; I followed you so that I can see more of your view of NYC!

Anyway, I hope this isn't too random of a note from a stranger, but one of my New Year's Resolutions is to write reviews and comments more often so I thought I'd say hi and that I liked these photos 🙂

I SO miss the fog! I grew up in California, and we got some pretty epic fog days there…. now I'm in New Zealand we get very few (at least, in the breezy coastal city I live in) but being in summer now even days requiring a jacket seem impossibly far away. I'd love to curl up by the fire on a dreary foggy day just about now.
