a wool overcoat from everlane.

Some of you might recall that last winter I was bemoaning the difficulty of finding a winter jacket and wearing it without feeling cold or frumpy or otherwise less than wonderful. In case you need a refresher, here’s the post.

And in case you’re still on the hunt, here’s an introduction to a brand new and solidly lovely option.

Everlane launched two new wool coats for women this winter and I had the opportunity to take their Wool Overcoat for a test drive. The coat comes in two colors: black and burgundy. Like all of their products, Everlane’s overcoat is responsibly made and entirely traceable. Because the coat is sold direct to consumer, Everlane doesn’t pass along the additional mark-ups that often accompany this kind of luxury product. Speaking of luxury: I’ll use a lofty word to describe just how the jacket feels: Sumptuous. It’s thick and soft to the touch. It’s a coat for a grown up.

everlane-overcoat-reading-my-tea-leaves5D9A3308-EditHere are a few photos of me wearing it while doing my best Jane Birkin and walking nonchalantly down the street carrying a basket full of crimson mums! Just another day in the life. (Wink.)

I admit that before I tried it on, I wasn’t sure I’d love the straight, untailored cut and I wasn’t positive that I could pull off the extra length, but once I was wearing it, it made me feel…regal. The collar’s long enough to pop for a little extra warmth and…intrigue. The pockets are big and roomy enough to actually use.
everlane-overcoat-reading-my-tea-leaves5D9A3543-EditIn addition to Everlane’s Wool Overcoat in black, I’m also wearing their Cashmere Crew Sweater in ivory, and their Chelsea Boots in burgundy. All three additions to their catalog get my hearty stamp of approval should you be on the lookout for classic additions to your own thoughtful wardrobe.everlane-overcoat-reading-my-tea-leaves5D9A3430-EditWhile it’s clear that this coat isn’t something to wear down the ski slopes, it definitely fits the bill for wintry walks and it’s versatile enough to be dressed up or down. everlane-overcoat-reading-my-tea-leaves5D9A3472-EditThe extra length means that it’s just right for keeping chilly bums warm as the weather cools down.everlane-overcoat-reading-my-tea-leaves5D9A3614-EditAnd if  you’re feeling like you can’t go another day without it, the Everlane Overcoat is available for 1-hour delivery in New York and San Francisco

So lovely. I was just thinking this morning (looking down at my stained sweatshirt from college and not-so-glamorous cotton leggings) that I need to find some casual pieces that make me feel elegant. While I don’t have your height (and I don’t believe Everlane offers petites yet), I’m thinking this coat is a step in the right direction!

Seconding the request for Everlane (and all clothes retailers, everywhere) to start making petites! It makes such a difference to us tiny folk

Wow, beautiful! And you had to guess that somebody would ask it… Where did you get your jeans?

Thanks! They’re the Frame Denim jeans that I talked about in this post!

Would you mind sharing your height and the size you went with? How is the arm length? My biggest issue with coats is accommodating my small frame but long arms. I always look like I’m hulking out of coats!

As Bethany says, “beautiful!” And the coat passes my “weddings and funerals” test. That is, if I were to attend a winter wedding or a funeral, would this coat work? The answer, of course, is yes, absolutely.

I’ve been working on finding some ethically sourced clothing and have really fallen in love with Everlane. But I wonder, where do you look for jeans?

Oh if only Everlane offered petites! I’m 5’1″ and if you’re wearing an xs, this coat would absolutely drown me. Tell me you have the kind of sway with Everlane that can singlehandedly convince them to start making petite sizes, asap! 😉

Great post! I’ve shied away from Everlane cashmere because they recommend “dry clean only.” Do you hand wash yours or spring for the dry cleaning?

    • Reply Erin Boyle November 9, 2015 at 1:56 pm

Hand wash (infrequently)! Never had a problem.

I machine wash my Everlane cashmere (delicate cycle, cold water, lingerie bags) after every four or five wears and haven’t had any problems. Go for it!

You look so beautiful in these pictures! How does the coat hold up chasing Faye around the playground? I sometimes feel like longer coats can be a bit cumbersome with little ones with all the bending down to zip up tiny zippers and such..

    • Reply Erin Boyle November 9, 2015 at 2:10 pm

Thank you!! Haven’t done a huge amount of playground chasing in this one, but I would say that a long coat is pretty much a requirement for me. I get too chilly if a coat doesn’t at least cover my bum!

Everything is gorgeous. I’m so curious, though….what’s your sock situation in those boots? 🙂

    2
    • Reply Erin Boyle November 9, 2015 at 2:12 pm

I wore low socks for these shots, but for longer days of wearing them (yesterday I walked for two miles in them!), I’ve worn longer socks.

Thank you. I’m just never sure if i’m allowed to show a longer sock with this style of boots!

What beautiful photos (and coat!). I have a feeling it would be far too long on me, but I’m tempted to give it a try.

If only I lived somewhere where a wool coat was necessary more than 3 days every year. But those boots…

beautiful! Did you have a chance to try the wool trench as well? I’m a bit too short to wear the longer length of the overcoat, I think, but I have been looking for a good fall/winter coat for a while now!

I got mine years ago at Brook Farm General Store, but it’s a pretty classic French market basket, available at loads of different online (and offline) shops!

Oh, I adore this entire outfit – the whole feeling of it is simply timeless! You look comfortable, chic and vintage! The overcoat has the look of a coat that could have belonged to a beloved grandfather, and being so well-constructed, has lasted through the generations. Quality, for sure.

May I also say that your hair looks so lovely and shiny! I am totally envious – suffering from a new and unfortunately, too-short haircut – so your picture makes me sigh!

I’ve been going back and forth with the Chelsea boots in black or burgandy and your post is only making it harder to decide! Thoughts on how the burgandy looks with black jeans? I’m afraid they’ll be too red. And just for emphasis, love everything you’re doing here (and the new simple matters interview series!!!).

I have tried it! I’m not sure the exact measurements (you can email [email protected] to learn those!), but it hits me at about my knees. I’m 5’5″ and tried the extra small.

I love Everlane! Lucky you get to test drive their clothes 🙂 I’ve been looking at their wool coats but I’m skeptical about the length. You styled this outfit beautifully (the boots match the tone of your lipstick!) but I’m looking for more ways to wear long coats. Any suggestions? Again, LOVE this outfit!

Looks amazing on you! 🙂 I also recently purchased one of the Everlane wool coats. but I’ve noticed a little stretching in fabric by the wrists. Have you noticed any stretching and/or how do you recommend caring for your coat??
