How are you cleaning house these days? As in, your actual, physical home? With our whole family generally spending so much more time together inside our apartment, it feels like we’re cleaning just about constantly. Add to that a newly crawling baby with an interest in putting every single thing into her mouth and, well, it’s an endless cycle of slobber and swipe around here. Recently we’ve been using this genius all-purpose household spray from Meliora by way of MightyNest.

More about what makes the cleaning spray so great in a moment, but first a refresher on MightyNest. They’ve been in the business of getting customers acquainted with eco-friendly and sustainable household essentials for more than a decade. Every month, members of their MightyFix subscription are introduced to a new tried and tested product—anything from a zero-waste dish soap to fan-favorite reusable produce bags—and given free shipping and steep discounts on whatever other goods they need to re-up for their households, from laundry and cleaning supplies to personal care and pantry items. If you’re thinking this sounds like a really great indie alternative to other one-stop shopping sites, you’re right!

This fall, I’m partnering with new MightyFix subscribers to get them set up with this first fix—the Meliora All-Purpose Home Cleaner plus a box of three refills, for just $3. MightyFix subscriptions always ship free and you can add anything else to your order and that will ship free, too! After receiving your first fix, you now also have the chance to select future fixes according to your needs. All new members have member profiles where you can share what solutions you have and what sustainable swaps you’ve already made so nothing comes to your door that you can’t use or that you don’t want!

As for the spray itself, I’ve been pitched on many of these kinds of refill products, and I feel like I can say with a modicum of authority that the Meliora All-Purpose Cleaning Spray is one of the most efficient and low-waste refill options I’ve used. To get started, all you need to do is pop the non-toxic, palm-oil free soap tablet into the glass spray bottle, fill it up with water, and shake. The tablet dissolves quickly into the water and you’re left with an entire bottle of cleaning solution that’s safe for the whole family and doesn’t require you to use any single-use plastic at all. When you’re down to the last drop, just add another tablet to the same glass bottle and you’re ready to begin again, still single-use-plastic free.

Whenever I write about cleaning (which is fairly often enough being someone with a blog and a rather fastidious side) I’m reminded of the Carol Channing bit from Marlo Thomas’s Free to Be You and Me. If you were a child in the 80s maybe you know the one. About housework and the smiling lady cleaning on TV? I used to lay on the carpet in our living room and listen to the record over and over again which is to say that yes, absolutely, this is an advertisement for a cleaning product, and yes I’m being paid to write it. You don’t have to smile while you use it, but to be totally sincere, it’s kind of hard not to while watching the bubble-gum sized refill transform into a whole bottle of cleaner with the shake of a bottle.

Indeed, the whole MightyFix model is to take something that feels daunting and make it feel legitimately doable and yes, even fun. Every month a fix arrives to your doorstep with a cheerful note explaining the particulars of the product at hand and how that product fits into the larger project of living more sustainably at home. I’ve said before that I love the generosity of spirit inherent in the MightyFix. It feels like finding sustainable solutions under the gentle guidance of an encouraging and trusted friend and if you’re someone already well-versed in the world of sustainable household goods, you can gift a few months of the service to someone you love who might just need a little extra encouragement.

I am in love with the wood spoon holder on your stove. Where did you get it? Apologies if you have already shared this.

Oh, thanks! James gave it to me a few years ago! I think he bought it locally at The Primary Essentials!

They must have sold out. I have a stainless steel one I’ve had for decades, but I like the wooden one. My niece covets my steel one, so I’ll give it to her when I find a wooden one I like. Enjoy your day! P.S. I voted early!

Ah, likely! This was at least three years ago! Yay for voting early!

Oh my goodness–had to chime in, because Meliora is a Chicago company, and all their products are made in the city (yes, I am based in Chicago). So happy to see this company get more attention. They have great practices and they really do make stellar products (if anyone wants to try their fragrance free laundry powder, it has my endorsement).

I’m also such a big fan of Meliora! Their laundry soap is great, and they are very thoughtful in their low-waste practices.

Yes yes yes! I first heard about Meliora from Erin two or three years ago and haven’t looked back since! Their laundry detergents are great, I buy the refillable paper bags for my first container from them and just pour them in with ease. The all-purpose cleaning solution is wonderful and easy to use. I am personally obsessed with the stain stick that works on laundry but also is great to take with you on camping trips! And I recently bought the Oxygen Brightener, a bleach alternative, and found that works wonderfully as well! I’m so happy Erin is writing about Meliora again and how wonderful and eco friendly they are!

Glad to hear they are shipping to Canada and at such a reasonable rate!

My baby is at a similar stage to Calder. She roams around picking up bits … we’ve started calling her “Roomba” and “Heidi the Hoover” 😉

Thank you for this post. Can’t wait to try these products! I am so tired of wasteful packaging. On voting-I used a drop box in my town. I also set up an account online where I can see my voting history. It does not show how I voted. I wanted to be able to verify that my vote was received and recorded. I just checked. Received and recorded!

SOLD!! I’d say 99% of my household goods are non-toxic but the rub, as always, is the packaging. I love that you pop in a tablet rather than refill a container (because with all those containers to refill and refill from, something is bound to end up in the recycling bin, no?) I’ll be checking this out immediately. Thanks, Erin!

This stuff is so great! The little soap tablets come three to a little cardboard box, so there’s a little bit that ends up in the recycling, but it’s leaps and bounds more efficient than other refill solutions!

Do you know how long the mixed product last? I found (perhaps because my spray bottle was too big and I was making too much or not cleaning enough:D) when using dr bonners it really started to smell strange and not work as well. Love the idea of the tablet though! And per the other commenters I’ll be trying the laundry soap.

hmm, interesting! haven’t been using long enough to notice any kind of change! it’s specially formulated for this use, so i don’t anticipate it being a problem!

Shoot, seems they are out of the bottle with refill pack. When I try to check out with just the bottle it says I need to add an applicable product before using your code. I’ll try the product but I’m sorry you won’t get the credit!

Hey Alice! This promo is specifically for folks signing up for the MightyFix, so if you want to do that, there are definitely bottles and refill packs waiting for you. If you just wanted to buy the product itself, you might have to wait for a restock (and the promo wouldn’t apply!). Hope that makes sense!
