my week in objects (mostly).

October 23, 2020

1. this keyhole.

{and the beach walk to find it.}

2. these tires.

{because a lot lately is better with wheels.}

3. this beautiful volume.

{for tucking into.}

4. this official address transfer notice.

{because tomorrow, i vote.}

5. this other keyhole.

{for being a whole other project to tackle.}

other things:

it’s nice if you can keep a basket of toys at your office, but it’s not childcare.

organic but not obtrusive, adapted to the longue durée of the pandemic.

a reckless disregard for the impact its policies have on children.

to deny them this ability isn’t just old-fashioned.

diversifying abortion stories.

sister suffragettes.

food forest.

considering.

i voted.

    Dear Erin, thank you as always for your Friday posts! They’re one of the little things that brighten the end of every week.

    I bet you already have a plan of attack for your “keyhole”/door hardware project, but for anyone else thinking about gunky much-painted doorknobs/plates/hinges/knobs/what-have-you, simmering them with a good splurt of dish soap on low heat for 6-8 hours does the trick. You can also use a thrifted slow cooker to make it even easier (just don’t use it for anything else, hahaha).

      Yes!! Did you see the little link I included? My instagram pal *just* went the slow cooker route and results are amazing. Feeling slightly apprehensive about letting these simmer away inside the house, but doing my research!

        Oh my gosh, I didn’t even see that Instagram link! (Admission: I have been known to — which is to say, always — read your blog during work hours for a little oasis of calm. Instagram is blocked so I didn’t click through!)

        I have been reading Daniel Kanter’s home blog (formerly Manhattan Nest) for about as long as I’ve been reading yours, and that’s where I clued into the slow-cooker method! Such a clever idea. Very excited to see how yours comes out!

    I spent the first month of quarantine uncovering all the hinges from our rented 1890s brownstone apartment. Removing years of paint and varnish was so satisfying but especially therapeutic given those early weeks of non-stop sirens. I will surely need to tackle a similar project during this election countdown…

    Voted! Official drop-box at the public library— California lets you be a permanent mail-in voter for no reason, just because it’s convenient, but we dropped them off in time to count on 11/3. Fingers crossed— more worried about keeping our amazing rep, Katie Porter, than California, which will vote blue.
