make-believe: parties after dark.

November 29, 2021

Someone saw a picture of me yesterday and said it reminded of them of their mom in the 70s, so I’m leaning into the vintage mom look with a make-believe holiday party get-up, complete with twirly dress and twirly candles and sky-high boots in warm wintry colors. I tend toward climbing into pajamas as soon as the sun sets in the winter, but I’m missing the festive buzz of holiday gatherings where the walk there is too cold and the room gets too warm and everything’s merry and bright anyway. Here’s what I’m dreaming about:

A patchworked dress, reworked for the holidays…

A recycled cashmere turtleneck for keeping cozy…

Sky-high boots in just the right color…

A Black Mountain serving platter for a mound of my childhood party favorites

Candles for just the right glow…

a revitalizing cream to keep the cold air at bay…

Juniper berry earrings for feeling festive…

A peppercorn wreath for decoration…

and

A silk velvet scrunchie.

TAKE ACTION:

In an effort to ground this make-believing in something a bit more down to earth, here’s something that needs urgent attention:

Chizh for Cheii: Help support at-risk Diné elders on the Navajo Nation by donating to replenish their supplies of firewood. Fire is crucial for cooking food and purifying hauled water and used for prayer/ceremony for the Diné community, many of whom live in remote rural areas with no electricity and limited access to firewood. Head to 4Kinship to enter a special sweepstakes and donate to theChizh for Cheii cause through December 9, 2021. The winner will be announced Dec 10th on the 4KINSHIP instagram feed.

Oooh yes recycled cashmere is the best! May I recommend Nearly New Cashmere to any U.K. readers out there? https://www.nearlynewcashmere.co.uk/

Thank you, Erin, for the link to the fundraiser for the Navajo elders. I live in Rio Rancho, NM — was unaware of the organization and its work on behalf of indigenous Americans. Wishing you and your family a peaceful and joyous holiday season.

Dee, not sure if you’ll see this, but since you’re in NM I’m sharing this opportunity to further support your Indigenous neighbors: https://www.honornativelandtax.org/

Since these posts have debuted, they have always been my favorite as a fellow make believer. Sometimes I find a treat for myself, or to share. Sometimes I just partake in the daydream and admire the dreamy objects

Thank you so so much for including our velvet scrunchie 🙂 I’m obsessed with those patchwork dresses too.
