a new mattress from leesa, a year later.

November 20, 2017

This post is sponsored by Leesa, a mattress company with the simple goal: “to help people sleep better”.

It’s not very often in the world of partnerships that you get to talk about something old, but when Leesa reached out to see if I wanted to write about the experience we’ve had with their mattress, I jumped at the opportunity. It’s been a little over a year and a half since we gave up our ten-year-old double mattress with the cavernous pillow top and swapped it for a sleek queen-sized Leesa mattress (more about that experience here). And I stand by my claim that upgrading our mattress has been the single biggest game changer in our tiny apartment. As I’d hoped, a year and a half later, we’re still enjoying every minute of sleep that we get on our Leesa mattress and I can honestly say that it feels as good now as it did when we first got it.

In case you’re unfamiliar with the company, Leesa sells their mattresses direct-to-consumer in boxes that arrive on your doorstep. They are 10” hybrid foam mattresses made with three foam layers: A two-inch top layer of Avena® foam is perforated to keep you cool and provide cushiony bounce while two inches of memory foam makes up the middle layer and relieves pressure. The mattress core is made from a six-inch dense foam for durability and structure. I can’t say that I have a princess-and-the-pea ability to discern all of those layers myself, but what I do know is that the mattress is very comfortable, quite affordable, and a huge improvement over what we had before.

And for folks who are interested in something new from Leesa, they just launched a new pillow. The pillow has the same signature look as the Leesa mattress and it’s made with cooling and responsive Avena® performance foam. If you prefer to try out either in person, Leesa has partnered with West Elm, so that their products are now available to try (and buy) in more than eighty West Elm stores nationwide.

Questions of comfort and performance aside, I’m so glad to be partnering with a company committed to doing good. As a certified B Corporation, Leesa is required to meet high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability. B-Corps are charged with using the “power of business to solve social and environmental problems.” Toward that end, for every mattress that Leesa sells, they donate one tree to the Arbor Foundation and for every ten mattresses that Leesa sells, they donate one mattress to charity. Last week, I accompanied Leesa to The Bowery Mission here in New York City, where they’ve donated more than 300 custom-made mattresses. Together with other volunteers, I sorted food donations, helped with lunch service, and climbed up on bunk beds to dress Leesa mattresses in West Elm organic sheets. I was awed by the work of the Bowery Mission and so grateful to see the impact of their partnership with Leesa up close.

If you’ve been wanting to upgrade your old mattress to something a whole lot nicer, now’s your chance. Leesa is currently offering their deepest discount ever: Now through Black Friday (11/24/2017), you can get $125 off the Leesa mattress plus a free pillow with your order. If you miss their offer, you can always use TEALEAVES for $100 off the Leesa mattress, plus free shipping.

So glad you like you Leesa mattress Erin. For us, we found that it was too soft but Leesa gladly took back the mattress and refunded us our money. One thing I was not aware of though – and I think it’s important that your readers realize this – is that mattresses that are returned are *not* donated (at least not in NYC), as no shelter or non-profit in the city will accept a used mattress due to concerns about bedbugs. Leesa put us into contact with 1800-got-junk to have our mattress removed. It was shocking to say the least. In the end, we worked it out with Leesa to donate the mattress to a person in need in our neighborhood, and had our neighborhood association (with 5013c status) write us a receipt that Leesa would accept. So I give Leesa huge credit for being willing to work with us on this, but it took a lot of work on our end. I think people should be aware that these “risk-free” trials do have a huge cost for the environment.

Hi Nadia, Thanks for your note. So glad you were able to work Leesa on donating your mattress and kudos to you for taking those extra steps. Yes: I’ve since learned that New York City shelters do have particular constraints about accepting used mattresses. The mattresses that Leesa was able to donate to The Bowery Mission were all new (and some of them custom-made to fit non-standard bed sizes). This makes me especially glad that folks can try the mattresses at West Elm locations before buying! Very hopeful that cuts some of the waste out of the equation.

I am hoping for the same re: trying out first at West Elm!

Erin, I’m curious: why do not close the radiator with a screen? Is not he hot?

It is hot, but we don’t own our apartment and getting a screen made to fit such a large radiator is an expensive investment that we haven’t made yet!

I bought a king sized Leesa mattress in May, after a lot of online research. The clincher was your previous post about your mattress and your responses to my questions.

I was very nervous about it, and my husband was super skeptical.

It’s been so comfortable, back and hip pain gone, and I’m not woken as much by my husband tossing around, because there is very little bounce. Also we upgraded to the king size because he’s 6’ 3” and tends to take up leg room. I call the mattress The Continent.

I also took your bed frame recommendation, the Keetsa. It is beyond sturdy. When he was assembling it, my husband said he no longer had any doubts about making big purchases online.

I’ve been rotating the mattress from head to foot every two weeks (not flipping, because the top is meant to be the top), but I think I don’t need to. There has been no indentation in six months.

Thanks for writing about it! Also, I found your blog after buying your lovely book at a local bookshop.

Diane, I’m so glad to hear that you’ve had luck! We’ve never rotated our mattress…haven’t noticed a difference!

We also have the Keetsa bed frame. Have either of you had a problem with it squeaking?

no squeaking here, solid as can be!

My husband says we must have gotten a dud. He’s spent hours trying to fix the problem! But we love the way it looks! Need to email the company.

We bought a double size Leesa per your recommendation for our guest room with our last tax return (because we want to do SOMETHING nice for our parents who continue to do so much for us!), and – haha – my husband and I keep sneaking in to sleep in the guest room instead of our own bed. We’ve had two guests now say it’s the best sleep they’ve had in a long time.

This post couldn’t have come at a better time — buying a new mattress/bed frame is at the top of my to-do list for 2018!

We bought a king Leesa a year ago almost exactly and I’m constantly telling my husband it’s the best money we have spent. I️LOVE IT. We live in 700 sf and just had our 3rd baby and getting into it at night makes me so happy and snuggling in it as a family of 5 every morning is totally worth the enormity of it.

Whats your opinion on the fact that it is a foam mattress health wise; breathability, the unnatural components, etc? We have a spring mattress now and need a new mattress but cant decide on whats healthier long term…

Totally understand, I actually wrote about this a bunch in my first post, link above! I had a hard time deciding to go with foam and did a bit of deep dive to make sure it was something I wanted to sleep on, and ultimately I decided that it was the best option for us in terms of price point and comfort.

I worried about this too, but also read that regular spring mattresses often have hazardous chemicals in them.

There was a strong smell to the mattress when it unrolled out of the box. We left the windows open and the mattress unmade for two days.

Then, for the next two weeks, I stepped the bed every morning, opened the windows, and let it air out.

I only noticed the smell strongly for the first few days. For two weeks, I could smell it faintly if I was lying down.

        Then the smell was gone.

My husband only noticed it for the first couple of days, though, so maybe my nose is just more finicky.

Fascinating, Diane! This wasn’t our experience. Our mattress didn’t have an odor when we unrolled it. But a friend recently purchased a pair of twin mattresses from Leesa and on the day they arrived, they definitely smelled a bit too! All dissipated now, thank goodness!

My number one question is does anyone who has one find it hot? I have a memory foam mattress now that is unbearably warm. Does the top layer of perforated foam on the Leesa really work? I sleep super hot, and desperately want a cooler mattress. Trying one out at West Elm won’t help for that, though, since you can’t really tell how hot a mattress runs without spending a night in it.

Hi Hannah, Gotcha! Wrote about this last time around, too! We’ve found that it sleeps LOADS cooler than our previous mattress. So much so that we’ve actually had to bundle on the blankets in the winter to make up for it!

I’m a menopausal woman who was already getting too warm at night, but the mattress doesn’t make me feel hot at all. I’m very comfortable.

We bought a king size Leesa after spending so much money on mattresses through the years and we have been SO happy with it. We bought a second one (queen size) for our daughter about 6 months ago and she’s very happy with it. I can’t imagine ever buying another brand or walking into one of those mattress showrooms again! We do not find the mattress hot at all and we live in California. I have had a lot of back problems through the years but I no longer wake up with aching back or hips!

A question here….Got my Leesa mattress 4 days ago. We unrolled it and left in the spare room. Still has what I call a very strong chemical odor. Even unzipped the cover and folded it back. Window open. You can smell it when you walk into the room. Doesn’t seem to get any better.

Have to hope it will improve in time as I am eager to get it into my room and sleep on it! Wondered about sprinkling it with i baking soda??? I am allergic to many odors and do not feel comfortable breathing this in.

This sounds awful. It was not at all my experience four years ago, but I would definitely be in touch with the company.
