i get it. it’s just a roll. a white flour roll smothered in butter that’s more than a few steps removed from the farm {i’m being generous here}where it was made. but to me, it’s perfect. all wrapped up in that white paper, the feeling of the roll in my hand at 27 is the same as it was when i was 6. the anticipation of its chewy, salty perfection. it’s a regional thing, i’m pretty sure. and for me at least, a special treat. the same now as then, only now rather than my dad placing the order and handing the package down from the height of the deli counter, i waltz in myself and order. a hard roll with butter, please and thank you.

This looks perfect to me….just sayin…
simple pleasures…are always the best!
well now i'm salivating.
you get this, i know it.
Yum, little beats good bread and butter. So simple and satisfying
a soft bread and salty butter. nothing better!!
I prefer a baguette, but anything made of bread suits me just as well.
ah bread, my lover, my foe…
The best! I get so bummed out when I have one of those mornings where I just want a cup of coffee + milk and a roll + butter. Coffee shops almost never have plain rolls and it kills me! I can't face something sweet first thing in the morning, bagels are not my thing, croissants seem too indulgent for a Thursday morning on the bus.
i've never experienced the joy that is stepping up to a counter and ordering a hard roll with butter. and now i clearly must š
Yummy! š
Absolutely perfect. I could go for a soft kaiser roll and butter any day.
like like like
All the way across the ocean in Scotland, I am thinking it looks pretty perfect. My favourite from our bakery is a well-fired (the top is slight burnt) morning roll, with butter.
Have you ever had a with a few crunchy crisps (chips)-my preference is salt & vinegar flavour – as a filling?
omg this is one of the biggest things I miss about ny. I love them with a little butter. Or even better when nursing a bit of a hangover topped with a fried egg.
Yes! Long Island childhood memories! Yum!
I remember as a kid in the 50’s going down to the bakery and getting a dozen hard rolls…bringing them home ..putting butter on one and biting into it.The taste of the chewy hard on the outside soft on the inside was heaven!!!
