all over this land…

PeteSeeger{photo of my two heroes, here}.

today is pete seeger’s 90th birthday.

growing up, my parents took me and my sisters to his clearwater folk festival every single summer. we would eat juicy plums from our packed cooler, listen to folk legends strum on their guitars, dance barefoot in the grass until we were too tired to think, wear ridiculous looking straw hats to counter the sun, get too sunburned anyway, and end the weekend in rousing song with pete seeger and the gang. when i was 10, pete came and plopped himself down in the grass next to me during a late afternoon story in the story grove. i don’t remember what he said, but he took my little browned hand in his and smiled. i don’t think i’ve ever been as excited.

and so there you have it…i passed my childhood gettin’ down to folk music and singing at the top of my lungs. thank you mom and dad. thank you pete.

happy birthday.

{and a happy, happy song here. go on, you know you want to listen}.

    sing your way home
at the close of the day
    sing your way home
    drive the shadows away
    mile after mile
    wherever you roam
    you can lighten your load
    you can brighten the road
if you sing your way home.

    i love you
