what a name. what a flower. blooming all over this old town and as pretty as can be. i didn’t grow up with crepe myrtle in my backyard and so for me the flower still feels like the stuff of novels–just another part of a romanticized south where porch doors slam and dusty yards get swept with a broom, and moms are called mama. and then i see it all fuschia and brilliant in the summer haze, and it’s as real as can be and even more beautiful than that. oh, crepe myrtle, you’re gonna make me lonesome when i go…
p.s. tomorrow i will be one quarter of a century old, and to mark the occasion, i might bring a few of your blooms into my little house. yes, i think i will. i hope you don’t mind.

it kind of makes up for the unbearably hot summer days in the south…doesn't it? "look here," it seems to say, "i need this heat to be, you see?"
