help (or, vanity disguised).

November 3, 2009

scissorstoday i am getting a hair cut. it has been 11.5 months since my last one and this mane has got to go. {looking at this photo from a dear friend’s wedding has helped to convince me. yikes}. the trouble is, i hate getting my hair cut. i always let it grow to be far too long, invariably am disappointed with the cut i finally get, and so put off getting another cut for a year or so. oy. tips or tricks (or words of encouragement) for a girl with impossibly straight hair and an unwillingness to commit time to styling would be much appreciated. xo.

update: matt. matty. mattypoo. let me just say you have mad haircutting skills. and the way you massaged my scalp? priceless. lerve the new do, simple though it is. and thanks to all you gals who helped me through it.

I wish I could help, but I'm no fan of having my hair cut… How about this–even if it's not ideal, it will always grow back.

i spritz a bit of Paul Mitchell root boost and hit the town. Fine, straight hair is a little bit happier with a touch of help at the roots. that's all i give it though. enjoy the cut and change!

Well, the part of me that fervently wishes my hair would grow past shoulder-length says "Don't cut it!" But, knowing how good it feels when I am happy with a haircut and have a lighter head of hair, I say go for it.

I've been happiest with haircuts when I: 1) speak up and am really descriptive with the hairdresser; 2) get layers and subtle face-framing angles (gives my fine hair some boost); 3) hold off on evaluating it til I get home and re-style it myself (I always feel like a poodle after the salon).

Jenn has really straight hair and has tried great styles…you should talk to her!

Finally, your hair is different than mine, but this is what I would do: Call the Warwick Mall, JCPenney Salon (I know, sounds so lame). Ask for Chrissie. Problem solved.

Erin! I having the exact same dilemma right now! I love having long hair b/c I can do so much with it but right now it feels too long and needs to be cut. My friends are trying to convince me to go super short but I am so nervous! However, I keep telling myself that it will grow back! I do like that getting your hair cut makes you feel lighter and refreshed. I am trying to take the drama out of it and just look at it as a fun new thing that will maybe bring out a different side of myself. Good luck, my dear!

don't fear it erin! the magical thing about hair is that it grows back…this is coming from a girl who cut (hacked) her own hair through college.

also, find a stylist you have a good report with and someone that does a great job. stick with them as long as possible. the more they work with your hair the better!

I think your hair is really pretty!
but i understand the urge to cut it off!
I just scheduled an appointment for myself (next week) and I am telling Antonio, "Just cut it the way you want" I am being brave, I just want it cut!

let us know what you do.

I am a fan of the long bob. It is so easy to maintain and I love the classic look of it.

Judging by that photograph, your hair is very long. I'm sure the haircut will turn out great.

I go through similar phases, I don't want my hair cut in trendy layers and thinned out, and fear that is what will be done, so I don't go often and think I have finally found someone who understands me.

    Good luck.

I am a wash and go person, I just discovered silky dirt by jonathan and love it!!

i think you look beautiful in that picture. simply ask for a trim, relax and enjoy getting your hair washed and blow-dried by someone else. then once home and it's your turn to style, wash and go (turn your head upside down and give it a scrunch every now and again as it dries) or put it up in a ponytail. too easy…or as we say here in australia – no worries, mate!!

I, too, am so over my long hair, and the fact that it's incredibly thick and wavy and just heavy all around makes it not-so-easy to manage. I dream of getting it cut short à la Audrey Tautou, but I doubt I have the nerve to do such a thing.

    Good luck to you!

I wish I could give you some good advice, but I don't like going to the hairdresser either… But I'm sure it will be okay! 🙂

glad it worked out ok! i hate to get my haircut and very often do it myself to make it last. i wonder if my stylist knows? i'm sure he does, especially since i have short hair. when i do get it cut, i'm usually so happy i did and look much better and even ;).

glad to hear you were happy with your cut! I don't stress over getting my hair cut usually, but I have fallen victim to a bad cut or two. but once you find a stylist you love and whose scissors love you back, your golden!

you should definitely post a pic!
