five little things that made my week.
1. this collection of precious things.
{in their temporary new home downstairs.}
2. these boxes.
{for meaning we didn’t have to go on a neighborhood sweep of liquor stores begging for cardboard.}
3. this mantle.
{and this crop, which hides the years of debris caked inside it.}
4. this patch of light.
{because the rear of our building gets such beautiful light. silver linings abound.}
5. this mama’s day present.
{and the much-needed dose of color and brightness. (for the curious: i ordered a large kid’s size so mine would be fitted).}
other things:
slowly warming up to block heels.
i will gladly give my home address to anyone willing to deliver this to me tomorrow morning.
and while we’re at it! (thank you!)

Hi Erin,
Are you making the move to a larger apartment? Good luck. My father moved recently & I didn’t find a bin rental service for long distance moves. I was told they were for local moves. I live in New England. Looking forward to an update!
Oh, no! Just moving downstairs while our apartment gets abated for lead paint!
That is still a lot of work! That’s great you were able to move temporarily downstairs while they do the work.
I look forward to these posts every Friday. Your round-ups never disappoint. Happy Mother’s Day, Erin!
I’ve been checking out that Smitten Kitchen recipe ALL WEEK. I am definitely going to be making it soon! And that elder flower margarita is swoon worthy.
OMG, that cardigan! And I see that it comes in a soft green… I had no intention of buying a sweater today, Erin, but I’m about to press “Place order”!
Happy Mother’s Day weekend! Loved the post, but also. Nobody told me that even though motherhood is incredibly challenging sometimes, you also get a second chance at childhood – everything from tidying up to digging in the dirt to talking about body parts is filled with such discovery. Life / work / bills bills bills in a big city temporarily disappear when I enjoy being a kid with my kids xo
Erin! I loved your addition to the ELLE.com article! Thoughtfully shared. For better or worse, I am the same person I was before my son… somehow your acknowledgement of that is a sigh of relief for me. Wherever I go, there I am. Even in motherhood. Glad I read through and saw your contribution!
I loved your additions to Elle too! Every day I think, maybe tomorrow I’ll WANT to get up at 5am. After 2.5 years, it’s still wishful thinking.
PS happy mother’s day!
I think you had great idea with ordering the Babaa in kids sizing. I got three of their jumpers and two were too big:( so dod you go for 8yo?:) im similar size to you snd wonder id it could work for me too:) good luck with the new apartment.
Yes, I think that’s right! Whatever the biggest is!
Loved the ‘One Thing Motherhood Taught Me’ article. It’s so true; we stay fundamentally the same. I’ve learned a lot about who that is, however, and I’m certain I couldn’t have learned those lessons (sometimes heartbreaking) without becoming a mother. I always say, motherhood is like someone took the top layer of my skin off, and I’m going through the world exposed. It’s both good and bad and always full of feels. Happy Mother’s day to everyone, mothers, daughters, friends and the women who sit with us when we think the pit is too deep or the cloud will last forever.
I loved the @manrepeller article on selfies! I have been a longtime viewer of Instagram but never posted a photo. But that read inspired me to use selfies to practice self-love and acceptance (hello, crow’s feet!). I started posting pics on Friday and have loved it so far. @suburbanfigfarmer
