my week in objects (mostly).

June 8, 2018

five little things that made my week.

1. this baseboard.

{which is no longer rotting, or peeling, or falling off the wall.}

2. this patched up blackout curtain.

3. these surprise muffins.

{a sweet surprise to our door, with a surprise inside: blueberry and rhubarb!}

4. this more clever hiding spot for our mop.

{because sometimes you have to say something out loud to realize you already have a solution.}

5. these linen-wrapped diaper pail handles.

{for making it so the freshly painted walls don’t get scratched up.}

other things:

how to talk about suicide.

on mental illness.

choose a different cardboard box.

americans in europe.

there are no grown-ups.

size conversation.

i wish these were real.

never enough summery drinks.

    Oh, I wish those were real, too! I wish they’d given us a mini-series instead of movies!
    I just bought Bringing Up Bebe and this book sounds amazing, too. I wonder if I should read it now or wait til I’m older…

    I love that visible mend on your curtain!
    I spent this past week mending a well-loved quilt, which was probably once store-bought by my mother-in-law but now has nearly as many of my stitches. My favorite sections are those that were most damaged, where I had to re-weave an appliqué or leave a visible patch to reinforce. What a joy it is to put care into the things around us.
    I’ve been reaching out to dear friends today to remind them that reinforced bits are the strongest, and the most loved.

    Great reading list this week! I really liked the Uline piece and the time management piece. I appreciate your list because you always link to great sites that I forget about.

    I also love your charming wrapped diaper pail handles. You are so clever!

    A small house question … do you use anti slip mats under your floor mats? I find them so difficult but I’m trying to decide if they’re a necessary evil…

      We do! We didn’t at first but then we had a crawling/just-walking toddler and everything changed! We got the eco-friendliest ones we could find from RugPadsUSA!

    the mop is one of the things that we can’t solve in our house as well. Right now it’s tucked between the fridge and the wall, at least.

    I loved reading this: https://onbeing.org/blog/miguel-clark-mallet-the-problem-with-simplicity/
    It reminded me of your lovely book.
    The reminder to court complexity is a good one- so much of a convenient life is a privilege at the expense of someone else.

      Thanks so much! Including in this week’s Friday post.

    Thank you for the idea of the linen-wrapped garbage can handles. I have the same problem and the solution looks so obvious now.

    I know others have asked before but please please please indicate when a link is to an NYT article!! I know you’ve said before something about hovering over the link shows that its an NYT article but it doesn’t happen on my computer for some reason. Cup of Jo and Design Mom both do it well and it’s so appreciated 🙂

      Hey India, I know you’ve been in touch about this in the past! A quick google search should help you to find a way to have your status bar show urls before you click on links! It’s a good thing to have in place generally, and would solve your problem here.
