Checkout counter story is great, thank you. My sister manages a grocery store and despite being the most exposed member of our family (more than the frontline healthcare workers on COVID wards!) for the last year she’s going to end up being the last of us to be vaccinated. So so unfair and disrespectful and dehumanizing.

Yikes! Grocery store employees should have been in the first phase of vaccinations.

Oh, wow, that romper article. I keep saying Americans don’t even have the imagination for what a family friendly country could look like.

Reading from the UK and going through a miscarriage right now, it’s just so shocking to me that women in the US are having to deal with everything I’m experiencing PLUS financial worries. It’s inhumane. Here, when you see a doctor or go to the hospital, money is not mentioned and you never see a bill or a list of costs; the only follow-up contact you get from the hospital is to check you’re OK, not to chase a payment. Medical care must feel totally different when you know there’s going to be a bill at the end.

Yes! Here in Canada too. I’ve had two miscarriages and was taken care of before, during, and after with all the procedures and follow up in the hospital, calling an ambulance, and with a private OBGYN after, and money wasn’t brought up once. I can’t even imagine how awful that would be.

so many good things. I appreciate a lot the Anne Helen Petersen piece. I’m already anticipating possibly having to quit social media when everyone in the US is “back to normal” or the new normal or whatever and the country where I have chosen to live probably will not even be 25% vaccinated. not to mention so many other countries around the world. and for no reason other than profit. and the long history of colonialism. that definitely makes me angry.

Love Anne Patchett’s writing, always and forever!

We just got universal pre-school here in Portland, too late fo rme, but I’m happy for those who will benefit. Very much hoping for universal daycare in the near future. It would have changed my life had it been available to me.

The second of those Julia Bainbridge drinks brings up the only real beef I had with the book: why do so many of the evening cocktails involve caffeinated teas and who are these magical people who can sleep like a ‘coconut cream dream’ after drinking them at 9:00 at night??

I can’t! Bought it many years ago from Schooljouse Electric but they don’t make it anymore.
