I read that Atlantic piece during lunch. Not exactly a fun read, but an important one.
I’m glad that I somehow still have wells of care within me to continue being cautious. The well of sanity is just about dry, however

The Atlantic piece was spot on. We were going to spend the holidays at a family member’s party but it turned into a big affair, more than 15 people, and we just don’t feel comfortable with that. As frustrating as that choice is, I know it’s the right one for others’ sake as well as ours. We are opting for a much smaller group, just the two of us and one relative who we know has been as cautious and careful as us and we are all boosted as well.

The link to how to deal with unwanted gifts is so spot-on. I have always been a minimalist. But, right now we are preparing for a cross-country move that is going to cost a not-small fortune. We have donated 21 car loads of items to Goodwill and Habitat for Humanity and sold dozens of items on Craigslist. We had the big family gift exchange last week, and, honestly, 50% of the gifts we received went directly into the Goodwill pile as soon as the guests left. It was probably $200 worth of items. They were painful to open, painful to fake joy about, and painful to donate. In light of the move, people also gave us stuff like chocolate. The chocolate was unwrapped and placed directly into the compost. I don’t have time for any of this. Any. I have zero energy. This is the hardest Christmas I have ever been through and it is entirely due to the items I am surrounded by. It is because of the stuff. Too. Much. Stuff.

Hello Erin! I just wanted to tell you that I love your posts about making or up cycling crafts . I work in a pre-school with a very small budget & we cannot purchase a lot of expensive materials & decorations- even Pinterest projects, which require buying materials. I get ideas from your blog & often ask parents to donate items that would normally go into the trash or recycle bins too. Have a happy new year & keep the ideas coming! Thank you!
