things i will do in march.

March 2, 2022

I have an email in my inbox calling me an eco-warrior. I should write back to say I know nothing about war. Last night I toasted red pepper flakes and forgot them in the skillet while I read accounts from the Ukrainian border. My family coughed and spluttered our way through dinner, struck by the lingering assault of capsaicin hanging the air—a small discomfort from an agitator without staying power. I don’t have anything wise or novel to say about armed conflict, so I’ll offer these words from someone who is smarter than me and I’ll stand by the quip of the old yellow poster: “war is not good for children and other living things.” May there be peace in Ukraine and everywhere.

Other things I will do in March:

+ Try to help feed someone. (Also.)

+ Stay informed.

+ Keep vigil and send aid.

+ Look for the crocuses.

+ Petition for school libraries.

+ Knit something.

+ Tear up old bedsheets.

+ Read poetry.

Commit to beginning a meditation practice…and follow through. My future self will thank me. I’ve begun wondering how my life and others will be impacted because of this one decision.

Thanks for the link to the World Central Kitchen. I just donated and hope others do too.
