my week in objects mostly.

January 20, 2017

There are so many objects in the week after a baby arrives that feel monumental: the burp cloth that arrives at the right moment; the trio of ibuprofen handed over with a cup of cold water; the tiny slippers fetched from a drawer by a big sister; dinners from neighbors and chocolate bars from friends; flowers from sisters; bags of groceries from parents. But so many of these objects are things that I haven’t had a chance to photograph in these first ten days. As always, this is just a sampling of those things that made my week. Huge thanks for so many kind notes welcoming Silas. More soon.

five little things that made my week.

1. this basket.basket_reading_my_tea_leaves_IMG_6621

{and this makeshift diaper changing station. making do in a tiny apartment…}

2. these tiny overalls.overall_reading_my_tea_leaves_IMG_6640

{hand-knit for a tiny guy.}

3. these oatmeal cookies.cookies_reading_my_tea_leaves_IMG_6633

{which surely count as health food.}

4. this stack of blankets.blankets_reading_my_tea_leaves_IMG_6619

{and a closet rearranged to accommodate stacks of cloth diapers.}

5. this wall of things.wall_reading_my_tea_leaves_IMG_6627

{for getting all hung up just before our little arrival.}

other things:

by their fruits.

a rare opportunity to devote no thought whatsoever to what men might, or might not, decide to do.”

not the final word.

leave wishes for the future.

my america. (pay what you wish at the whitney today.)

    I’m so glad the overalls arrived! And I hope they keep sweet Silas warm and snuggly (I also hope they fit- they seemed so very tiny but then again it’s been a few years since I’ve had a newborn to dress so I might have forgotten just how small they are!)

    Congratulations on your new family member!
    I love your gorgeous blog. I found it just before the holidays and have been reading all of your back posts. I also just read your book. Love it all and wish I came across it years ago.

    Is your changing pad (in the first photo) homemade? It looks wonderfully simple and I am looking for a possible alternative to the one we currently use. Thanks!

    Congrats on Silas’ arrival, Erin! He’s adorable and your family is lovely. I have so enjoyed your posts on intentional living for small spaces over the past few years, and on the evening of almost 3 million Americans uniting in favor of rights, justice, and love, I wanted to say thank you for sharing your heart during this incredible (and incredibly challenging) time in our nation’s history.

    Your overall caption makes me want to knit some of my own (#3 is due in early May) but also starts the song “Teeny Little Super Guy” playing in my head (an old Sesame Street skit from when I was not much bigger than Faye).

      Loved that skit when I was little!

    Congratulations on your son! He looks wonderful. I know you’ve mentioned in the past that you’re vegetarian. I would love it if you could do a post on your go-to meals!

    Congratulations on that beautiful baby boy, Silas. Such a strong name. Since you are so creative and very frugal thought you might like this idea.
    When both of my grandsons were finished using their muslin swaddles, i asked my daughters to give me four of their favorite ones. I sewed them together (4 squares) and made the boys a king size muslin blanket. Daughters loved them so much they had me make them each one for using on their beds in the summer.

    Congratulations on the safe arrival of your little one – wishing you all lots of happy times and good sleep. I’ve read your lovely blog for a long time and always find inspiration.
    My top tip for new parents is to delegate whenever possible – if someone offers to help just say yes – they’re probably happy to scrub the bathtub or clean the fridge to give you just a few extra moments to rest.

    Hi Erin, just wondering what color is your macausland blanket? Having a hard time telling the different between taupe and dark grey and natural brown on their website!

      Oof. Good question! Taupe rings a bell, but it’s been almost 10 years since my mom gave it to me for Christmas!
