It’s the season for keeping a bowlful of bright citrus in the apartment. Cheering to look at, to say nothing of being cheery to eat.
James and I try to be mindful of eating foods that come from nearby, but when we’re stuck in the middle of January in New York and everyone knows that there’s so much California citrus begging to be gobbled, we allow ourselves the indulgence of a little transcontinental treat.
When the treat can be turned into evening mood lighting, all the better. We first made these citrus votives while playing cards with family over Christmas—nothing like a little competitive citrus peeling to pair with some competitive card playing—and were shocked by how long the little suckers burned.

But at least your citrus is from your own country. Homegrown citrus in the UK is never going to happen. The votives look so beautiful.

Beautiful! I feel so lucky to live in Florida right now. Our markets and back yards are overflowing with citrus!

I have a bowl of oranges on my kitchen counter. It is as chilly here in Nova Scotia, Canada as it is in New York and we all need our vitamin C.
Mmm looks (and likely smells) so lovely. I don't know why I haven't jumped on the citrus votive wagon, but obviously I need to. Just love it!
We have amazing oranges here in Australia, they're not in season right now & i won't buy imported ones so i'll have to wait for good ones, the ones available now aren't very good. I unfortunately can't keep citrus fruit in my home as the smell triggers my husband's migraines so i only eat them while out of the house. It makes them feel like a real treat!
I'm definitely trying this! As a California girl I'm lucky to have bright plump oranges just ready to be picked from a tree in our yard. Morning fresh squeezed orange juice has become a ritual.
I love love love this idea and can't wait to try it! Probably not with this week's farmer's market kumquats (a bit too tiny!), but definitely next week 🙂 Thanks.
