the colors of the sea. i don’t remember the first time i read sarah, plain and tall, but these words from have echoed in my head ever since.
this weekend, a trip to block island for a conference. we went by ferry and cruised up and down the island’s hills by bus. i’m not sure when it’ll happen, but i think i’m destined to live on an island eventually. i’ve spent time on islands, but only for a few months at a time, when the romance of the place hadn’t worn off by the time i had to leave. but still i think island life might be exactly what i need: everything i need in one place. the sea to lull me to sleep at night and to keep me company in the sunlight.
what do you think? could you make it on an island?

Yes! Of course, I was born and raised on one, so it's an easy answer for me! Not sure I could live on a very small one though… unless I had it to myself.
Ile o' manhattan.
love block island! i think someday i could live on an island, but for now i love the city.
i lived on an island of 300 people off the coast of maine. it's where my bf grew up.
it…was…magical.
but ferry rides in the winter are not magical.
It looks gorgeous! I hadn't learned about Block Island yet. Now I'll have to add it to the "places to visit on the east coast" list.
beautiful!!
i could definitely live on an island. my husband grew up in the marshall islands and we spent a summer there a few years ago. i constantly crave the peace that i had while we were there.
Grayed blues and greens…these have become my favorites lately. Calm water, shallow tide pools, a slightly overcast sea… x
Happy new week
What beautiful photos! I love the sky in the third photo. I grew up on an island off the west coast of Canada. You could totally do it! Granted, my island has about 1/2 a million people living on it.
One of my friends grew up on a tiny island with no running water or electricity, and when you wanted a bath, you lit a fire under the claw-foot tub in the yard!
So this post pretty much seals the deal on us being kindred spirits! Sarah, Plain and Tall is one of my all-time favorite books! The minute I read this post title, I knew where it was from. I always think of that line too when I see a grey day at sea. "Blue, and grey, and green, depending on the weather."
Happy Monday, friend!
I would love to live on an island. I think that a cool one would be better than a hot one. Stifling heat doesn't make me feel the "love".
I think I could do it… yup. Definitively.
(can you believe I lived in Rhode Island (Cranston) for almost a year and never really visited the coast? Shocking I know)
i don't know if i could live on such a small island, but your lovely pics sure make it tempting, especially the last two.
"the sea to lull me to sleep at night and to keep me company in the sunlight…"
yes.
I believe I could make it on an island. I spent a great September on Block Island. There is a wonderful island history section in their little library. I also enjoyed Martha Ball's Island Notes column in The Block Island Times. I'm a big local library and local newspaper nerd. I've often wondered what it would be like to endure an entire cold quiet winter on an island such as Block Island.
