james got some disappointing news yesterday afternoon, so we were in need of pretty serious comfort food for dinner. our friend jenny has been running a column over at wine spectator, where she shares a mid-week recipe that uses only eight simple ingredients. on this week’s menu? grilled cheese and spicy tomato soup with beaujolais. nothing says comfort like a bit of melted cheese, so i hopped down to our favorite local cheese shop yesterday and picked up a chunk of a deliciously sharp cheddar. it was so good that i’m tempted to eat the last little bit for breakfast.
jenny recommended a moulin-à-vent to go with, and having spent the better part of a year right around the corner from beaujolais, i couldn’t resist the pairing. delicious. jenny’s been running her series, called 8 & $20 (eight ingredients & wine under $20) for a few weeks and has shared some lovely wintertime recipes so far. if you’re feeling stumped mid-week, check them out.

the ideal comfort food
hope james is feeling a little better about the disappointing news
What a great idea and this recipe looks so good.
Hope everything gets better 🙂
Sounds great. I hope you're feeling better!
Grilled cheese is one of my all time favorite foods. Sourdough with cheddar and thin slices of apple is a fun fall version. Hope James is feeling better today.
I hope you two are able to turn the disappointing around. Until then, cheese and wine should help (at least a little bit). Take care, Denise
sorry to hear about his bad news – grilled cheese fixes everything though, right?!
Love this! You had me at Cheese, but then you owned me at wine! ahha
Hope that this news turns around and you find a shift in perspective to ease the blow…

Grilled cheese and tomato soup is my absolute favorite comfort combo!
even the humblest of meals can be elevated by perfect ingredients and the right wine. c'est très français, non?
ugh, sorry to james about the bad news! bummer. comfort food is the way to go, especially grilled cheese!
Hope everything is a little better after that sandwich!!
Yes, perfect comfort food. We went through quite a bit of extra sharp cheddar ourselves this weekend.

Used the very same tomatoes (via delicious Bishop's Farm Market) this eve to make vegan/chili/chowder for those sisters of yours, headed in our direction. Pairing that with a crusty salt-&-butter baguette, a wedge of Maytag Blue from Iowa, a nest of peppery arugula, & a crisp sauvignon blanc. Come eat with us tomorrow & we will love you.
YUM! I am trying this AND going to read her blog! Thanks for sharing!
Ooo yum! Love that idea, and that looks like the perfect comfort food recipe!
