sounds.

leaves
if i sit quietly for long enough, i can recreate in my head the exact sound of fall as i would hear it at age eight. with my bedroom window still open on early september mornings, i would lie in bed, cozy under the covers and listen to the sound of a train whistle being carried on the crisp morning air. the train passed in summertime too, but something about the chill in the air made it sound different. and then of course there was the sound of the fall leaves, and my dad’s crunch on the gravel as he went out to pick up the morning paper–out to the end of the driveway, and back in again.
i’ve been thinking a lot about sounds lately. had the pleasure of listening to some of betsey biggs‘s work yesterday. and have been enjoying pia’s latest soundscape today (if you haven’t listened yet, hurry over, you won’t be disappointed).
all this to say, i’m feeling very inspired and thinking i might need to invest in a little recorder of my own. and, that this morning i will crunch as many leaves as possible on my walk to work.
what have you been listening to lately?

    Beautiful post!

I spent a lot of time the last two weeks listening to the sea. Not just the sound of the waves hit the beach, but the deep boom of the churning current.

And, one night, on the way home I listened to the soundlessness of two foxes skulking around the garden and the distant sound of the wind generators cutting through the air.

Thanks for this! I'm dying to check out the links!

As I was reading I was listening to Hermie crunching through his breakfast.

Beautiful post, gets me thinking about the sounds of my childhood.

I was walking the dog last night and the wind blew so perfectly past my ears, it felt like it was speaking to me.

    Love the listening.

i love this, brings to mind so many lovely memories of my own. as of late, my world has been full of the sound of rustling leaves, even when he wind stops blowing; new giggles, my favorite; and words of comfort and love.

my college boyfriend was all about this…he took a class where they got mp3 recorders for the duration of the course, they went into the woods to record sounds sunrise, he brought it on our trip to europe and took awesome recordings of flamenco, bells chiming etc. i'm sad that i didn't manage to save any of those sound clips for my own memory of the trip.

I'm like this too! I love paying attention to all the different sounds around me. One of the reasons that I love my current apartment is that it can be so quiet. Almost like a blanket of quiet. So in the early morning I can hear the tiny sounds of the first birds chirping and nothing else. I love it.
