the field house.

a new shop by blackbird ballard, inspired by history and stocked with products made today. the field house is meant to evoke the general stores of the past, capturing “the history, geography, and folklore of times past when goods were less disposable and had more meaning, a time when people canned their own food and took a moment to converse with strangers.”

the store name is a reference to an old community center {a brief history here} located in seattle’s south park neighborhood where owner nicole miller’s grandmother and her sister would pass afternoons honing their craft skills in the 1930s. in addition to selling their wares (old standbys like candles and woolen blankets get cozy with organic veggies and local beef jerky), the good folks at the field house will also be offering weekly free classes on the lost art of skills like de-boning chickens and repairing lawnmowers. huzzah.

i don’t know about you, but i’m so excited i can barely stand it. now, i just have to get myself to seattle. in the meantime, read more on their blog, and to all of you west-coasters: run, don’t walk.

What a great find! I wish there were more stores like this (especially on the East Coast!) that celebrated simpler, more authentic times!

Opening a throw back general store has been a dream of mine for awhile. And these jerks did it! Damn them. But serious, looks awesome. Maybe I'll just come with you to Seattle.
