life in a tiny apartment.

Tip #41: Deck your halls. But more specifically, deck your door.

I admit, this is a teaser. I’ve got a whole slew of wintry things that I’ve whipped together to get this tiny apartment winter-ready, but for now you only get this one shot, captured in the half-glow of fluorescent light from my building’s hallway. Such is life.

Let me start by saying that I’m a firm believer in decking the proverbial halls. Regardless of creed, habit, or general attitude about merry-making, if ever there was a time to buckle down and get jolly, it’s in the dark month between Thanksgiving and the winter solstice. Hanging a little wintry something from your front door acts as a symbol to your neighbors. A wreath or a posy of winterberries says what you might not be able to:

“We’ll get through this together: you, me, and the holly berries.”

Honestly. The night seems to fall as quickly as the day begins lately, and if you’re anything like me, you’re putting your pajamas back on mere hours after you’ve taken them off.  Hanging something on your apartment door offers a glimmer of hope on dark days. If you’re feeling cheeky, make it some mistletoe. Kisses help everything.

Couldn't agree more. Plus, I find that decorations look their jolliest in a tiny apartment. Year-round cozy gets even cozier when decked in tinsel and evergreen. I can't wait to see what you did with your place.

ed and i go through this every year… are we getting a tree? are we not getting a tree?? as long as i can smell the piney scent, a wreath suits me just fine.

One of the fundraisers at a school I taught at was selling wreaths – oh my, they smelled so nice and it always brought a smile to my face as I opened the door.

I like how you decorated your door; it's pretty. I don't usually decorate my apartment. But I do like Christmas ornaments, even though I don't have a tree). I'd like to buy a couple anyway.

this is our first year together in our little apartment and i haven't started decorating for christmas yet. i've honestly felt intimidated by doing so in our small space, but this post has helped! 🙂 coming home to something pretty on the door really does automatically put you in a good mood.

We got our first christmas tree this year! A not-too-big-one for not-so-huge apt. So far, all we've managed is to get it situated in its stand (barely). Every time I walk by it, I stick my face in it and take a good sniff. It's begging to be trimmed!

What a wonderful post. I love your explanation for decking the halls is not just for you alone, but pieces of beauty for everyone. Well put.

Mhm! My thing this year is to make some sort of wreath with wild cotton sprigs as accents. It looks much better in my brain than it sounds typed out, and my mom and I already stopped roadside to steal a few from a local field.
