an avian valentine.

bird seed hearts I’m a big proponent of small-scale additions to public places. If it’s the kind thing that blends into a landscape or eventually disappears altogether, even better. For Valentine’s Day this year, I’m decorating the back alley with valentines for the birds. bird seed heartsThey’re little love notes left in birdseed as an afternoon snack for the chickadees and a bit of whimsy for neighbors passing by. The only thing nicer than receiving a valentine is making one for someone else, don’t you think? bird seed hearts

other things:
friendly gestures.
anonymous love notes.
tiny envelopes.
heart strings.

Oh, so sweet! The other day I had an extra piece of bread that I didn't want, so I tore it up and tossed it outside for the birds. I hadn't fed the birds in years. Such a sweet little gesture, love this idea! Happy Valentines!

Such a magic idea! And how lovely to know that the birds will be getting a little taste of Valentine's day, even though they're oblivious to it all šŸ™‚

Or perhaps the only nicer thing than making a valentine is receiving one. Making is divine, but I received more than a few "you're so sweat" valentines in my elementary school career.

That's pretty! This morning I saw a woman watching a flock of pigeons eating food that she'd scattered on the ground for them; she had this smile on her face as she watched them. So reading posts like yours makes me feel good that other people are also doing nice things for animals like the birds.

    hi, this is so sweet!
    .
    BUT
    .
at this point I think it's also important to know (and let readers know) that some birds give up their territories when they find a well stocked feeder, so if the feeder runs out of seeds, they may die, because they have abandoned their winter territories for this new spot they trusted to last till the end of winter.

so if someone starts feeding birds with a feeder, he should keep doing that at that very spot till spring! it's a commitment to those birds.

    anyway,
I love your blog, it's truly inspiring! thanks

Hi there! Thanks for your note. I've heard this concern about feeders (no worries, our grapefruit feeder is still going strong!), but I didn't realize that birds would leave their territories so quickly for a small amount of temporary feed. The birds and trees have already gobbled these treats, so I'm hoping there's no lasting damage. Thanks for the heads-up. Good reminder!
