tivoli: a music system giveaway

September 8, 2014

tivoli music system two If you’ve been reading this blog for a while, you’ve probably noticed the frequent appearance of one of our very favorite belongings: the Tivoli Model One (seen here and here and here, for example). We’ve had this hardworking little radio for years. It’s followed us to three different apartments in two different cities and—nerd alert—we’ve logged more hours listening to public radio on this guy than we could ever count. The fact that it’s so darn pretty is just icing.
tivoli music system two When Tivoli recently offered us an upgrade—and offered the same to one lucky Reading My Tea Leaves reader—we couldn’t pass on the opportunity to up our music listening game.*

Enter the Tivoli Music System Two.

The slightly larger system has two speakers, a subwoofer, two alarms, radio presets, and most awesomely, Bluetooth, which means that it can connect to computers, tablets, cellphones and anywhere else where you might store your music collection. (See Tiny Apartment Survival Tip #51 if you need encouragement to digitize your tunes.)

tivoli music system two

We’ve been giddily connecting through Bluetooth for stereo sound effects while watching movies and streaming Pandora as we rock sweet Faye to sleep. In case this bit hasn’t sunk in, this means no tangle of wires. Heaven. As for the radio bit, let’s just say that listening to Ira Glass in stereo is an awfully nice improvement.
tivoli music system two Happily, even with the upgrade the new radio is still marvelously compact. Oh, and there’s a remote control. Fancy.

For a chance to win a Tivoli Music System Two of your very own, leave a comment below, complete with your contact information, and a note about the very first album you remember loving (mine is John Fogerty’s Centerfield—’Rock and Roll Girl’ being my personal anthem).

The giveaway will close at 5:00 pm EST on Friday, September 12 and a randomly selected winner will be announced on Monday, September 15. Open to US readers, only.

>>>UPDATE: The giveaway is now CLOSED. The randomly selected winner is Maria who first remembers dancing along to Roy Orbison’s Memphis. Congratulations, Maria!

>>>Tivoli has also decided to offer RMTL readers a special 15% discount. From September 15, 2014 – September 21, 2014 enter TEALEAVES at checkout for 15% off your purchase!

*(Don’t worry, our original is still going strong and has migrated to the kitchen.)

This post and giveaway was sponsored by Tivoli Audio. Thanks so much for supporting the brands that keep Reading My Tea Leaves afloat.

The first album I remember loving– allegedly there was a Raffi obsession in my toddler years– is 10,000 Maniacs MTV Unplugged. My family wore that tape out on road trips (along with Cat Stevens' Tea for the Tillerman and the soundtracks to Last of the Mohicans and The Piano), and I listen to it today when I need to hear something that's just effortlessly comforting and wonderful. I bet it would sound great on a gorgeous Tivoli!

The first record I ever owned (and still love to this day) was Claude-Michel Schönberg's music for Les Miserables. A Christmas gift from my parents – I memorized the entire soundtrack before I ever saw the play or knew the story. Needless to say, when I was finally able to see a performance, I realized the story line I had come up with myself wasn't entirely accurate… 🙂

Embarrassingly, the first album I was OBSESSED with was Kylie Minogue's 'Kylie' album (it was the 80s in Australia, in my defence). I played it so much on the family stereo that my big sister threatened to cut the cassette film with scissors. Perhaps a Tivoli stereo could go some way towards healing that trauma…! Love the blog, Erin. Thank you!

Hmmm, first album love? Not sure I can be accurate about that, but most memorable was Born in the USA by Bruce Springsteen. Got the tape for Christmas and immediately played it only to hear Neil Diamond! Nerdy me thought it might be like a book – Neil Diamond offers an introduction to Springsteen's album. Uh, no. The entire thing was Neil Diamond in Bruce Springsteen packaging. (My brother, the gift giver, later exchanged it for the real thing.) [email protected]

Reading this post, I so vividly recall buying my first CD player. I was in my late teens, and buying it with my own money, so the practicality of a clock radio/CD player combo won out. My first album (in CD format), purchased on that same day, was Elton John's Love Songs. I still have it! Many hours, and many moods, have been spent listening to that album.

first album (vinyl, round, the real deal): james taylor, sweet baby james. 2nd: carole king, tapestry. i listened to genesis (phil collins, et al) and janis ian on my stack record player as a freshman in college every night, until The Boy in the plaid shirt and his Dire Straits lps. There was a Doors phase, Kate Bush in the desert, and an odd-ish Enya trieste at an even odder L.A. intersection (Idaho to L.A), but through it all, there has been U2. No wheels on the bus for my lil' one, it's been where the streets have no name. Now that tivoli. fabulous, and so perfectly-timed: u2 has a new album. i can feel a sing fest coming on, despite the kiddo's eye-rolls.

Hi Erin, I love reading your blog. Thanks for sharing your life (& this giveaway too!) with us. Many albums have stolen my heart through the years, but the first one I remember getting wrapped up in was The Cure's "Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me." It played often in the disc man's rotation while traveling to check out college campuses. An added bonus: it holds up pretty well today. ; ) [email protected]

The first tape I ever had to myself that I didn't have to share with my little sister was one of those "greatest hits" tapes you could buy at the gas station- this one was the Greatest Hits of Buddy Holly, and it blew my eight-year old mind. I didn't really understand at the time what drew me to the plaintive, yet hopeful, twang of our bespectacled Texas teenager, but I knew he knew my heart. I wore that tape out. I asked my dad to get me more, and I got another tape. I wore that tape out, too. I asked for more and my father explained that there were no more songs, not by Buddy Holly. So I asked him when Buddy Holly would make some more. Hopefully by my birthday. My father's face did something I'd never seen before, and he sat me down and explained about the crash, and how there would be no more songs by Buddy Holly, but that we could find other musicians who loved him and it would be like Buddy Holly still created songs, because he'd inspired so many. I wept and wept and wept because death was suddenly more than a funny-floating goldfish, but boy howdy, to this day I love me some Buddy Holly. It never gets old. I'd love to beam Buddy from my iPhone to my new Tivoli across the room. Wouldn't bring him back, but it would sure be nice.

My grandma gave me a cassette tape of Porgy & Bess. It became the soundtrack to all of my dramatic doll adventures. Listening to it now as a music education major, I am reminded how much I will always adore the combination of music and imagination.

There was a constant stream of Beatles, CSNY, Allman Brothers flowing from our stereo, but the first thing I remember choosing to listen to (on repeat) was the B-52's "Cosmic Thing." Feeling nostalgic about sitting on our way-past-its-prime gold shag carpet with giant headphones, blasting it as loud as I could stand, for as long as it was "my turn" to control the stereo and those headphones. I'm pretty sure the first CD I owned was Garth Brooks' Sevens. I'm not proud. But, the first album I ever bought for myself was Hanson's Middle of Nowhere. I can still put that on when I'm having a bad day and remember my 12 year old self bringing it home and memorizing every word in the liner notes.

Stuck between the vinyl and CD era, the first album I bought with my own money was Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam (lured in by "Head to Toe" http://youtu.be/51Iq8JmmfxY). Now, with a three week old boy in our possession, we've recovered our parents vinyl collection, and Billy Joel's "An Innocent Man" is in full time rotation. Four Eight Zero Three Three Zero Two One Eight Six.

I almost hesitate to admit this, but my very first albums were New Kids on the Block and Wilson Phillips. I got them in third grade, on cassette tape, to go in my brand-new Walkman. I can still remember the dizzying feeling of slipping on those headphones and hearing music that NO ONE ELSE was privy to. And then, when CDs tentatively stepped onto the scene, my first purchase was–yep–the Bodyguard soundtrack. Ahhhhh, memories.

My mother used to buy me the "long playing records" of the Disney fairy tales (waaaay back in the late 70s/early 80s) that had read-along book; a magical little chime would sound when it was time to turn the page and I was allowed to listen to them as I fell asleep. But my first musical album was Mickey Mouse Disco! (does that count?) 🙂

Bob Dylan’s Blonde on Blonde. In grade school, we had to give sixty second speeches on various topics. When “Musical Artists” rolled around, everyone was vying for Britney Spears’s self-titled debut. Of course, knowing that was going to be snatched up in the first round, my dad suggested Blonde on Blonde as my Plan B. Ever since, I have loved that album (and Bob as a fellow Minnesotan). My dad and I still bond over music today. Thanks for the opportunity to win and for conjuring up a happy memory!
