Erin: I can’t begin to tell you how much I have enjoyed your blog since discovering it. I also am in love with your book and find myself referring back to it day after day. So I hope you will take this suggestion in the spirit in which it is intended. I was wondering if you might consider linking back to independent bookstores and businesses instead of Amazon. I know from following your blog that you’re a big supporter of independent businesses and I do appreciate that fact! Have a wonderful time in California!!

      Hi Susan,
Thanks so much for this note. This is a conundrum for me. I support an enormous number of small, independent shops and I link to them very often in this space. I turn down advertising on a regular basis from companies that don’t feel like they’d be the right fit for my ethos or audience or general sense of ethics. But I also need to find a way to support this blog financially so that I can keep it free for readers and return to this place day after day. The Amazon affiliate program is a system that allows for me to make a small commission on goods purchased through that link and those funds help this blog stay afloat. I hope that helps explain my decision. You can read more about my philosophy behind financing this blog in this post: https://readingmytealeaves.com/2014/12/growing-minimalist-blog.html

I completely understand. Thank you for your thoughtful response. Your blog and book do a great deal toward supporting indies and I am truly grateful for them both!!

Did you have a chance to try the Patagonia travel bag? I am thinking of getting one and am curious how well it travels.

I really loved the Patagonia bag, but we never actually took it traveling! James and I each took a Tom Bihn bag on this trip and have loved them so far.

Your and your sister’s posts had me down the rabbit hole the other day about backpacks and luggage !! Now I’m curious to know why you finally decided for the Tom Bihn, if you find time to post about it!

Erin, would also like to thank you and Susan above for respectfully and openly discussing the Amazon issue. That thoughtfulness is an important element of why I follow here (and why I’ve been holding off on buying your book until I could get back to the States, or at least over to the UK! Amazon’s about my only option for English-language books here in France. But your point about that being one of the ways you sustain the blog is a good one). So — thank you for creating a space where a conversation like that can take place.

Anyway, hope you all are having a great time in California.

Echoing the request for a Tom Bihn review, please! It looks like you went with the Aeronaut 30, instead of the 45. I use the A30 as well and I think it’s perfect.

Is there pictures (inside) of the place you are staying? Looks adorable! And I loved the article on Sunday routines – what a hoot!

Loving your book! Hope you’ll consider doing an event in San Francisco down the road. Would love to have you sign it! Also, hoping you’ll post your thoughts on the Tom Binh after you trip. My husband and I just switched to backpack carry-ons and actually bought the Patagonia that you originally posted about but we considered Tom Binh heavily and I’d love to hear your thoughts. Thanks!

Also, try Superba Food and Bread while you’re staying in Venice. Even if you just stop in for one of their pastries to go, it’s so worth it! We stayed in Venice last year and I’m still dreaming of their blueberry coffee cake, hand pies, and other treats.

The idea of memorializing your life in objects (without being a hoarder) is perfection. Especially that little bottle of milk.

I’ve enjoyed your blog since I read your book which has given me a lot of ideas for our new home especially with the tidying, getting rid of redundant things and avoiding clutter. I always enjoy your week in objects post – the photos give me joy.

I love the links to the BFFs essay and the Sunday Routine piece! Thank you for sharing.

You also majorly piqued my interest with your DIY home cleaners. I used your recipe for board butter earlier this winter and am loving using it on my wooden kitchen tools 🙂

    Enjoy your time in California!

We always buy Strauss milk here in California. You can take the clean, empty jar back to the store with you to get a deposit back (or save it for a cute vase/travel souvenir in your case!).
