my week in objects (mostly).

December 18, 2020

1. these watercolor tags.

{easiest, prettiest. just find an abandoned kiddo painting and snip!}

2. these door panes.

{because all of my projects are moving at a mostly maddening snail’s pace, but i think now i can call these doors finished, so that’s one down!}

3. this pomegranate.

{and removing the seeds underwater for minimum juice splatter.}

4. this new rug for the kids’ room.

{two tied together and even better than i could have hoped for.}

5. this sprig.

{for being just right.}

other things:

all that 2020 has taken from us.

my answer was yes.

the ashes on the lawn.

dirt.

all we can save.

women start off with more concern and worries.

    Re: answering yes… my 5 year old asked me at dinner the other night. I could see in her little face that she didn’t want to not believe. I also replied: “Yes Santa is real Santa is the spirit of giving and that’s what Christmas is all about: giving to others”. Haha. I remember holding on to believing in Santa as a child. Santa is one of the best parts of childhood IMHO, ho, ho!

    I read about a great trick for removing pomegranate seeds with minimal mess, from Ottolenghi, I think. You cut the pomegranate in half , crosswise. Then you hold one half over a bowl, with the seeds facing the bowl, and you hit it with a rolling pin, as if it were a piñata. For a moment it will seem like nothing is happening, and all of a sudden all the seeds begin to loosen and they will fall cleanly into the bowl. I’ve done this every year when preparing poblano chiles in fresh walnut sauce garnished with pomegranate seeds (Mexico’s famous chiles en nogada).

Yours is the one blog I consistently look for, and I so appreciate your archived reviews, which are jumping off points for sustainable shopping for me, and I love paging through your book. Happy to add a subscription to my budget this year.
