apartment dreams: a black & white kitchen.

May 18, 2021

I’m taking a page from my dear friend LaTonya who helped pull me out of a funk by reminding me there’s value just in letting myself daydream. After last week’s ironing board unveiling, I’ve been dreaming about eventually asking permission to do some other kitchen unearthing; peeling back layers of fiberboard cabinetry and vinyl flooring and deciding what to keep and what to change and how to marry old and new. Using our black-and-white tile and adored vintage stove as a jumping off point, here’s the shape those are dreams are taking right now:

Salvaged sinks

and soapstone.

Spacious drawers in dark stains or lighter ones.

Bright lights in classic shapes

and solid knobs and simple pulls.

Tall doors with unpainted hardware

and a refrigerator to match a vintage stove.

Plus more inspiration being added to a growing board on Pinterest.

Any kitchen dreams of your own happening?

It’s time for you to buy a (small) dilapidated farmhouse in rural New England and document the renovation. Just go for it.

I am inspired by these ideas and also in the middle of a small kitchen overhaul. One of the photos you shared had an open shelve style that will be perfect. Here is to the reminder that daydreams are important

I’m curious – if you were to rate this apt and your last one on a scale of 1 to 10, how would each fare? Pros and cons to each: more light vs better sound proofing between neighbours…

Ha! Who knows?! What’s a 10? Definitely way more light and more space in this one!

My kitchen and small home living dreams are finally coming true, I only had to wait until I was 61 for it to happen …. gosh I’m going to enjoy the rest of my life. Sometimes it’s the waiting and planning that makes it all the more special. My fridge/freezer is the exact Smeg you have pictured only in cream … I have drooled over Smegs since I was 20.

You are working wonders in your lovely living space and are so very inspirational.

I just returned a book the library that had some beautiful kitchens and other amazing spaces in it: Still. The Slow Home by Natalie Walton. So much inspiration, though challenging to translate into my 600 sqf space.
