small improvements: shoulder hooks.

June 23, 2022

This afternoon I added two more 10-cent shoulder hooks to the back of the wardrobe in our living/dining/everything room. I’ve had these hooks in my tool box for months and I’ve had three different things hanging off just one of them for far longer than that, so it was about time I added the extras and gave everything a little more breathing room.

Sometimes I put off the very little things that make a very little difference and sometimes even that little difference feels big.

A shoulder hook is tiny. It can’t support a huge amount of weight and it won’t last well screwed into dry wall, but into a piece of closet trim, the inside of a kitchen cabinet door, or the back of a wooden wardrobe, these unassuming hardware-store hooks are my favorite for making small improvements of the get-everything-to-its-place variety. The tip of a shoulder hook is a screw, so usually all I need to install the suckers is a bit of brute strength and maybe a potholder or somesuch for gripping once the going gets tough. Otherwise, shoulder hooks are sturdy little workhorses that I’ve never regretted using.

If you need to hang something quickly and easily, get thee to a hardware store and get some shoulder hooks. That’s it. That’s the post.

What small improvements have you been making lately?

That’s a great idea! Hidden from sight but not from function. Your video is simple and beautiful!
Thanks for your ideas, always šŸ™‚

So many things still on my to do list! But lately – filling in the gaps in the cracked coving in our living room and trying to rehang the broken doors on our kitchen cupboards.

Put some bathroom items into bins, no more buying extra sunscreen when we already have an extra.

I love the color of the wardrobe – it’s so bright and cheery. šŸ™‚ It’s more of a life-improvement (and not a home improvement), but I’m trying really hard to only buy iced coffees when I have my stainless steel tumbler with me (and not buy anything in plastic cups with plastic straws).

I’m aaaalll for small improvements. I truly believe is where a lot of the mundane happiness can be found. In this last months I’m proud of:
    – rearranging the cable extender in a way that look most of the time hidden.
    – I hang my corck board (that was always on the wall) on one of the sides of my wardrobe just with simply some white cord and a pin on the top of the wardrobe. All material that I had at home.
    – Put some probiotics packages in little petit maman jam glasses. (this is an improvement on cuteness)
    – Designate a small cardboard box for when I want to reassemble and contain small stuff that has been floating around the room, so I can get inmediately a more relax feeling.
    – Finally hang some frames
    – Put an S hang in a key spot of the pantry. I can now enter without always bumping into a big bag full of extra tote bags on the floor.
    – Make a little opaque curtain for the window. I sleep a lot better (although I didn’t do the same curtain as you Erin, after seen you doing one encouraged me to it also!)

Getting out leftover paint and painting light switch covers and plug-ins the COLOR OF THE WALL they reside on. Why oh why did I endure cream colored plates on sand walls or worse? Now they literally fade into the woodwork and give me peace.

This is a little off topic but just want to say as an Irish woman living in London how horrified I and many others are about the decision today on Roe v. Wade. I grew up in NI where abortion was illegal so I have some direct experience of this and none of it is good. I really admire you for being so honest about your position on this as I know how divisive it. I wish you all luck in the fight.

Sorted and put away outgrown baby clothes and winter coats proper in a closet instead of piles on the floor. Then made muffins with my little one. Simple and exactly what we needed to make life good today.
